The last time I had Ubuntu on my spare laptop, the wireless card worked fine, and there were no issues getting on wirelessly.
So after a long time playing with the Win7 RC, I thought I'd give Ubuntu 9.10 a run to see what was new. And it won't detect the wireless card on the laptop, alas.
Any suggestions? It's a Dell Inspiron 1300 with the factory wireless adapter.
Thanks for any ideas,
Mowog

It should work fine. If the laptop has a button to turn wireless on and off, try that button. Also, did you use the upgrade or is it a fresh install ?

Thanks, Bert. It's a fresh install. I downloaded the ISO for 9.10, burned it to CD, and booted from that to install, thus wiping the Win7 installation that was on there already.
As for the wireless switch, there isn't a mechanical switch as such. You can toggle the antenna on/off using Fn-F2, but I thought of that already and tried it... no luck.
Dropping down the Network menu from the menu bar shows Wireless Networks as "disconnected."
If I go to System/Preferences/Network Connections, I see that wireless defaults to "connect automatically." but it's not happening. I have a very strong wireless access point here in my classroom, and all of my student PCs connect full-strength. So there's definitely a network present, but the capability on the laptop isn't working for some reason.
And again, it worked fine the last time I had Ubuntu on this laptop. Just for grins, I think I'll do a re-install and see what happens. I have the laptop on my side desk, and it can be doing its thing while I do real work...
Later,
Gryf

if that doesn't work, could you please supply me with the terminal outputs of the following commands:
sudo lspci sudo lsusb sudo ifconfig sudo iwconfig sudo lshw
(the last one will output a lot text)

Hi again - the reinstall went fine, but we still have no wireless. So - Here you go: sudo lspci: Code: gryf@gryf-laptop:~$ sudo lspci [sudo] password for gryf: 00:00.0 Host bridge: Intel Corporation Mobile 915GM/PM/GMS/910GML Express Processor to DRAM Controller (rev 03) 00:02.0 VGA compatible controller: Intel Corporation Mobile 915GM/GMS/910GML Express Graphics Controller (rev 03) 00:02.1 Display controller: Intel Corporation Mobile 915GM/GMS/910GML Express Graphics Controller (rev 03) 00:1b.0 Audio device: Intel Corporation 82801FB/FBM/FR/FW/FRW (ICH6 Family) High Definition Audio Controller (rev 03) 00:1c.0 PCI bridge: Intel Corporation 82801FB/FBM/FR/FW/FRW (ICH6 Family) PCI Express Port 1 (rev 03) 00:1c.3 PCI bridge: Intel Corporation 82801FB/FBM/FR/FW/FRW (ICH6 Family) PCI Express Port 4 (rev 03) 00:1d.0 USB Controller: Intel Corporation 82801FB/FBM/FR/FW/FRW (ICH6 Family) USB UHCI #1 (rev 03) 00:1d.1 USB Controller: Intel Corporation 82801FB/FBM/FR/FW/FRW (ICH6 Family) USB UHCI #2 (rev 03) 00:1d.2 USB Controller: Intel Corporation 82801FB/FBM/FR/FW/FRW (ICH6 Family) USB UHCI #3 (rev 03) 00:1d.3 USB Controller: Intel Corporation 82801FB/FBM/FR/FW/FRW (ICH6 Family) USB UHCI #4 (rev 03) 00:1d.7 USB Controller: Intel Corporation 82801FB/FBM/FR/FW/FRW (ICH6 Family) USB2 EHCI Controller (rev 03) 00:1e.0 PCI bridge: Intel Corporation 82801 Mobile PCI Bridge (rev d3) 00:1f.0 ISA bridge: Intel Corporation 82801FBM (ICH6M) LPC Interface Bridge (rev 03) 00:1f.1 IDE interface: Intel Corporation 82801FB/FBM/FR/FW/FRW (ICH6 Family) IDE Controller (rev 03) 02:00.0 Ethernet controller: Broadcom Corporation BCM4401-B0 100Base-TX (rev 02) 02:03.0 Network controller: Broadcom Corporation BCM4318 [AirForce One 54g] 802.11g Wireless LAN Controller (rev 02) gryf@gryf-laptop:~$ ^C gryf@gryf-laptop:~$ sudo lsusb: Code: gryf@gryf-laptop:~$ sudo lsusb Bus 003 Device 002: ID 046d:c016 Logitech, Inc. Have you tried updating your system and running the hardware drivers/restricted drivers application over wired network ? (you need the b43 restricted driver for your wireless, just like I do). You can find the app I'm talking about in System -> Administration

Yes, been there about three times already. The downloads failed every time, and I see now that it was an issue with our proxy server causing the problem - even though I've got my web access set through the proxy, and am able to browse the web okay in Ubuntu.
What I'll do is take my laptop home this afternoon and use a wired connection at home in another attempt to get any missing updates and drivers.
More news as it happens,
Mowog

Hm --
Re-tried at home; loaded all updates successfully, and although when you click the little network drop-down doodad from the menu bar it shows both the wired and wireless connections active, the wireless is still nonfunctional.
Gaahhh.

have you tried the restricted driver/hardware driver thing at home ? (there's the part you're missing)
